In a high-stakes move to fortify Nigeria’s financial ecosystem, the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) has entered into a strategic alliance with the Body of Bank Chief Executive Officers to dismantle sophisticated cybercrime networks.
The collaboration was solidified during a high-level consultative meeting held at the NPF-NCCC Headquarters in Abuja, marking a significant shift toward proactive intelligence-sharing between law enforcement and the banking sector.
The Director of the Centre, CP Ifeanyi Uche Henry, PhD, officially received the delegation and reaffirmed that the Nigeria Police Force remains unwavering in its commitment to neutralizing cyber threats through advanced digital forensics and strategic global partnerships. He emphasized that because financial systems are frequently exploited as the primary conduits for criminal transactions, the protection of Nigeria’s Critical Information Infrastructure is a shared responsibility that requires seamless integration between police investigators and bank executives.
“Effective collaboration with financial institutions remains critical in addressing cybercrime, as these systems are often exploited as channels for criminal activities,” CP Uche stated during the briefing.
The delegation was led by Mr. Nixon Iwedi, Chairman of the Body of Bank Chief Executive Officers and Managing Director of Signature Bank, who noted that the visit served as a direct follow-up to previous high-level engagements with the Inspector-General of Police. He explained that the banking industry is seeking to deepen its cooperation with the NPF-NCCC to create a more resilient barrier against financial fraud and cross-border cybercriminal activities.
Mr. Iwedi lauded the NPF-NCCC for its professionalism and resilience in navigating the complex landscape of digital crime. By combining the Centre’s mandates which range from social media monitoring and vulnerability assessments to threat analysis with the real-time data of the banking sector, the partnership aims to create a hostile environment for fraudsters while ensuring the security of depositors’ funds across the nation.
