Women in Osun State have taken to the streets to protest rising killings and pre-election violence ahead of the August 15 governorship election, calling for urgent action to protect residents and stop further bloodshed.
The women marched to the Osun State Police Headquarters in Osogbo, where they submitted a petition demanding stronger security measures and the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for election-related violence.
A video of the protest shared by Yiaga Africa under the hashtag #OsunDecides2026 showed the women marching through the streets while carrying placards calling for peace ahead of the election.
Some of the placards read, “Please, Vote Not Fight” and “Peaceful Election is Everyone’s Responsibility,” as the protesters urged political actors and security agencies to put the safety of residents first.
Women Submit Petition to Osun Police
At the police headquarters, the protesters submitted a petition calling for immediate measures to prevent further attacks and protect voters and other residents across the state.
They also demanded that security agencies investigate reported cases of political violence and ensure that anyone found responsible is brought to justice.
The protest comes amid growing concerns over the security situation in Osun as political activities intensify ahead of the election.
The women urged the police and other security agencies to remain vigilant and respond quickly to threats that could disrupt the electoral process.
They also called on political parties and their supporters to avoid actions that could lead to violence or place residents at risk.
Violence Raises Concern Ahead of August 15 Poll
Civil society groups have raised concerns over cases of election-related violence recorded in Osun State in the months leading up to the governorship election.
The Kimpact Development Initiative has documented several violent incidents linked to political activities, including attacks and clashes that resulted in deaths and injuries.
The incidents have increased concerns about the safety of voters, candidates, campaign workers and residents as the election draws closer.
The women’s protest adds to calls for greater protection of citizens and restraint from political actors ahead of polling day.
With the election scheduled for August 15, the protesters called on security agencies to protect communities and ensure that residents can vote without fear or intimidation.
They also urged political parties and their supporters to respect the right of voters to choose their preferred candidates peacefully.
The protesters maintained that political disagreements should not lead to loss of lives and called on all stakeholders to work towards a peaceful election in Osun State.
