The Ondo State Government has introduced a fresh set of healthcare reforms aimed at improving medicines supply, strengthening diagnostic services, boosting local pharmaceutical production and attracting private-sector investment into the sector.
The reforms, approved by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, are designed to make the state’s healthcare system more efficient and less dependent on external sources for essential medicines and medical services.
Pharmaceutical and Life Sciences Hub
Part of the plan is the establishment of a Pharmaceutical and Life Sciences Hub, which will support drug manufacturing, biotechnology and other health innovations in the state.
The initiative is expected to create opportunities for local pharmaceutical production while encouraging investment in the health sector.
The government has also approved the acquisition of new diagnostic equipment to improve disease detection, support early intervention and enhance patient outcomes across the state.
New Drug Distribution Strategy
As part of the reforms, the Ondo State Development and Health Care Management Agency (OSDHCMA) is being repositioned as a central drug distribution centre for public and private health facilities.
The University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH) will also play a key role in implementing the reforms and supporting their integration into clinical services.
The new distribution arrangement is expected to improve the availability of medicines and strengthen coordination in the supply chain.
Focus on Nutrition and Private Investment
The state is also introducing patient-specific clinical nutrition and plans to work with nutrition experts to improve care for patients whose treatment requires specialised dietary support.
Government is further opening up opportunities for public-private partnerships (PPPs) in areas including medical imaging, specialised clinics, digital health and biomedical engineering.
The move is expected to bring additional expertise, technology and investment into Ondo’s healthcare system.
UNIMEDTH Seeks Consistent Drug Supply
While welcoming the reforms, the management of UNIMEDTH stressed the importance of maintaining consistent supplies of medicines and emergency drugs, including critical items such as anti-venom.
The hospital said reliable access to essential medicines would be crucial to ensuring that the reforms translate into improved patient care.
Overall, the reforms signal Ondo State’s push towards a more self-sufficient, efficient and investment-driven healthcare system, with greater emphasis on local production, reliable medicine supply, improved diagnostics and private-sector participation.
