Okpokwu Water Crisis: Benue Residents Face Health Risks

A severe humanitarian crisis is unfolding in the Okpokwu Council Ward of Obi Local Government Area, Benue State, as residents have been pushed to the brink of survival due to a total lack of clean drinking water.

The community, which contributes to Benue’s reputation as the “Food Basket of the Nation,” is currently grappling with a reality where basic hydration has become a deadly gamble.

A Struggle for Survival

For the families of Okpokwu, access to safe water is no longer a reality. Instead, residents are forced to rely on stagnant pools and shallow pits. These sources are heavily contaminated with sediment and untreated waste, yet they remain the only option for thousands.

The burden of this crisis falls most heavily on women and children, who trek long distances daily. They often return with containers of visibly murky water, knowing the risks but having no alternative.

Rising Health Risks and Economic Toll

Health experts warn that the community is a ticking time bomb for waterborne diseases such as Cholera, Typhoid, and chronic diarrhoea. These illnesses pose a lethal threat, particularly to the elderly and young children.

Beyond the immediate risk of infection, the crisis is stifling the local economy by carrying heavy containers over long distances is causing widespread exhaustion and physical injury among the youth, children are missing school hours to search for water, and time diverted to water sourcing means fewer hours spent on farming and productive labor, threatening the community’s livelihood.

Calls for Urgent Government Intervention

Advocacy groups and local observers are now calling on Governor Hyacinth Alia and the Obi Local Government Council to intervene before the situation results in a mass casualty event.

“It is deeply troubling that in Benue State, communities are still struggling with such extreme water scarcity. The situation has pushed the community into a dangerous reality where survival depends on consuming water that poses serious health risks,” stated MonITNG, a monitoring group tracking the crisis.

The Path Forward

The community is demanding a two-pronged approach to resolve the catastrophe:

  1. Immediate Relief: The deployment of water tankers to provide emergency safe drinking water.

  2. Sustainable Infrastructure: The construction of solar-powered industrial boreholes to ensure long-term water security and restore the dignity of the Okpokwu people.

As the dry season persists, the people of Obi LGA wait for a sign that their right to clean water will finally be prioritized by the state authorities.
