Education has been said to be the best legacy that anybody can receive in life to have a knowledge driven society but education that is not received in a conducive environment that is suitable for learning can never create an informed society.
For pupils of Itori Ewekoro Local Government Nursery and Primary School in Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State, state of limestone and where hundreds of world class manufacturing companies are based, what they receive in terms of education cannot be said to be total education with the strains of stress they go through on daily basis.
The express road that link Lagos to Abeokuta, the capital of the state that should be a blessing to the community has become a dreaded fear that has claimed the lives of their children crossing the road on their way to school.
It was recalled that more than ten pupils heading home from school were killed by a speeding lorry that left families devastated and a grieving community lost promising young people in December 12, 2012 made the affected parents to refuse their children attend school. With this incident, students’ enrollment rates dropped drastically in the community, and almost all pupils dropped out of school.
Government in her own effort intervened by providing a dilapidating poultry pen as an alternative learning space for the students of Itori Ewekoro Local Government Nursery and Primary School with over 500 pupils and 10 teachers were moved to an atrocious learning environment with leaking roofs, dilapidated walls, shortage of writing materials, lack of sanitary facilities, limited access to water and other basic amenities such as desks and chairs.
Desks and chairs were later donated by neighbouring schools and generous individuals. However, during the lengthy rainy season the school shuts down intermittently.
The ghoulish learning environment, the overcrowded classrooms and lack of toilet facilities put already frightened pupils in a deprived and disadvantaged position, which turned learning into an impossible chore.
In the effort to ensure that the school is built to modern standard and to avoid incessant accident of students on the express road, OANDO Foundation has partnered with the Ogun State Government to significantly improve the standard of education within its schools in
the state.
With this, the Foundation is seeking the support of kindhearted individuals around the world to raise $100,000 to transform the poultry pen into a proper school by constructing new classrooms, providing furniture for pupils, as well as water and sanitary facilities.
The Foundation believes that environment has a significant effect on behavior when there is stimulating and attractive classrooms which improve students’ motivation and performance.
