The Nigeria Network of NGOs (NNNGO) with the support of the European Union (EU) is embarking on a project aimed at addressing concerns surrounding the legitimacy, transparency and accountability of Nigerian NGOs
The programme is themed “strengthening the regulatory framework and enabling environment for a more accountable and transparent civil society in Nigeria’’.
According to a release by NNGO Consultation Planning Team, the project is aimed at addressing concerns surrounding the legitimacy, transparency and accountability of Nigerian NGOs.
The release noted that outcomes from the project will be a more transparent and accountable NGO sector, improved regulatory environment for the operation of Nigerian NGOs and the adoption of a sector wide code of conduct.
“As you may have known there are presently 3 bills at the National Assembly seeking to regulate the NGO sector, over the next 4 weeks we will be consulting with NGOs in Nigeria on these 3 bills in order to capture your thoughts and opinions through an online and telephone consultation.
“We will also be consulting with the sector on the Not-for-Profit Corporate Governance Code recently released by the Financial Reporting Council (FRC) in order to come up with a more widely acceptable code.
The NNGOs noted that responses provided will be used to engage National Assembly towards reviewing the bill and drawing up a civil society law that is responsive to the needs of civil society.
