The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has officially launched its Strategic Plan 2026–2030, a comprehensive roadmap designed to bolster climate resilience, enhance service delivery, and modernize performance management across the federation.

The plan, built upon the globally recognized Balanced Scorecard framework, marks a pivot toward results-based governance and operational excellence within Nigeria’s aviation and environmental sectors.

A Milestone in Public Sector Innovation

Director-General and CEO of NiMet, Professor Charles Anosike

Speaking at the launch in Abuja, the Director-General and CEO of NiMet, Professor Charles Anosike, emphasized that the new roadmap is designed to align the agency’s weather and climate services with Nigeria’s overarching national vision.

“NiMet is set to become the first public institution in Nigeria’s aviation sector to fully institutionalise this world-class system,”Professor Anosike stated. “The Strategic Plan (2026–2030) serves as a performance management roadmap… underpinned by five pillars: Employee Growth, Strategic Partnerships, Technology and Innovation, Quality Service Delivery, and Revenue Diversification.”

Professor Anosike, who also serves as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), noted that the initiative builds on NiMet’s 140-year legacy of safeguarding lives and property through data-driven insights.

Aligning with Presidential Mandates

The 2026–2030 plan aligns with the Presidential Performance Bond and results-based budgeting system introduced under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This framework, coordinated by the Central Results Delivery Coordination Unit (CRDCU), aims to ensure strict performance monitoring across all federal Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

By adopting the Balanced Scorecard, NiMet moves toward a system of accountable governance, where progress is measured not just by activity, but by tangible impact on stakeholders and financial stewardship.

Expert Commendation and the I-PACE Values

Kayode Sufianu, Managing Consultant/CEO of Balanced Scorecard West Africa (BSWA), lauded the agency’s leadership for its commitment to the transition. He highlighted that the framework would allow NiMet to translate high-level strategy into measurable results across internal processes and organizational capacity.

  • Integrity

  • Professionalism

  • Accountability

  • Commitment

  • Excellence

The I-PACE values are expected to serve as the ethical foundation for all NiMet personnel as they implement the new strategic objectives over the next five years.
