In a landmark move to redefine the nation’s economic trajectory, the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology (FMIST) has officially integrated Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) as the primary engine for Nigeria’s national transformation.
The initiative was solidified during a high-level meeting on February 19, 2026, where the Honourable Minister, Dr. Kingsley Udeh, SAN, met with United Nations representatives among them is UN – Resident & Humanitarian Coordinator Mr. Mohammed Fall, to formalize a joint working structure designed to bridge the gap between local research and global development goals.
A Roadmap for Sustainable Growth
The newly formed alliance focuses on establishing practical mechanisms to drive development that is not only innovation-led but also inclusive. By aligning FMIST’s strategic priorities with the UN Nigeria framework, the government aims to leverage international expertise to solve domestic challenges.
A central component of this partnership is the advancement of Chapter 3 of the “Pact for the Future,” a global commitment to ensuring that science and technology serve as a bridge rather than a barrier to progress. The Ministry and the UN have agreed to form a dedicated working group to oversee this implementation.
Governance of Emerging Tech and AI
Beyond infrastructure and policy, the discussions pivoted toward the ethical frontier of modern science. Both parties emphasized the necessity of ensuring that Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies are developed for the public good.
The collaboration seeks to create a regulatory and supportive environment where homegrown solutions can achieve global relevance while safeguarding the interests of the Nigerian populace.
