The NEDO Consortium has commenced its launch in Abuja with a media briefing focused on improving coordination among civil society organisations monitoring Nigeria’s electoral process ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

The briefing featured representatives of the five partner organisations: Dataphyte Foundation, the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID), DEAN Initiative, BudgIT Foundation and Yiaga Africa.

Delivering the consortium’s press statement, Dataphyte Foundation Country Director, Oluseyi Olufemi, highlighted the fragmented nature of election observation across separate civil society networks and the need for a shared system to collect, compare and verify electoral information.

“We recognise that no single civil society organisation, regardless of its experience or resources, can adequately respond to these challenges at the national level. Our response is therefore to work together, pool our institutional capacities, and establish a common evidence system that strengthens what each organisation can achieve independently,” he said.

Consortium Targets Better Coordination in Election Monitoring

The consortium is seeking to address gaps in coordination among civil society organisations by creating a common information system that allows participating groups to work with shared electoral evidence.

The approach is expected to support the collection, comparison and verification of information from different election observation networks, strengthening the capacity of the organisations to monitor developments across the electoral process.

Five Partners Outline Their Roles

Representatives of CJID, DEAN Initiative, BudgIT Foundation and Yiaga Africa also delivered remarks during the briefing, outlining their respective roles, contributions and expectations for the consortium ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

The media briefing set the context for the issues NEDO intends to address, how its shared information infrastructure will operate and how the five partner organisations will contribute throughout the electoral cycle.

With the 2027 elections approaching, the consortium’s emphasis on collaboration and shared evidence places coordination among civil society organisations at the centre of its approach to election observation.
