Media Rights Agenda (MRA) has officially condemned the violent assault on Mr. Mohammed Adamu, a journalist with Albarka Radio, who was reportedly beaten by police officers during the Eid Durbar celebration in Bauchi State over the weekend.
The advocacy group described the incident as a disturbing pattern of harassment and a direct hit to the safety of journalists and media freedom in Nigeria.
The Assault at Bununu
According to reports, Mr. Adamu was performing his legitimate professional duties in Bununu, Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area, when he was intercepted by officers led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), SP Jamilu Kabir.
Despite identifying himself as a member of the press while heading toward the designated media area, Mr. Adamu was allegedly assaulted with sticks. The attack left the journalist with profuse bleeding from head injuries and he was subsequently forced to flee the venue to seek medical treatment.
MRA Calls for Accountability
In a statement released in Lagos, MRA’s Programme Officer, Mr. John Gbadamosi, expressed deep concern over the recurring nature of these attacks. He emphasized that the role of security agencies is to protect the press, not to obstruct or brutalize them.
“Such actions by law enforcement officials not only violate the fundamental rights of journalists but also undermine the public’s right to receive information, which is essential for the functioning of a democratic society,” Gbadamosi stated. “Security agencies have a duty to protect journalists in the course of their work, and not to obstruct or brutalise them.”
Demands for Justice
MRA has formally called upon the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Olatunji Disu, to intervene. The organization is demanding for a thorough and transparent investigation into the conduct of SP Jamilu Kabir and his subordinates, the prosecution of all officers involved in the physical assault, and the adequate compensation for Mr. Adamu for his injuries and the violation of his rights.
The group further warned the Federal Government that continued failure to hold perpetrators accountable has encouraged impunity and created a climate of fear that threatens the survival of independent journalism across the country.
