The Lagos State Government has called for stronger enforcement of environmental laws and increased community participation in waste management to sustain a cleaner and healthier environment across the state.
The Permanent Secretary, Office of Environmental Services, Gaji Omobolaji Tajudeen, made the call at a Stakeholders’ Environmental Enlightenment Programme on Environmental Best Practices held at the Alimosho Local Government Secretariat Auditorium over the weekend.
Tajudeen, who was represented by the Director of the Environmental Education Unit in the Ministry, Mrs. Monsurat Banire, said indiscriminate waste disposal, illegal dumping, blocked drainage channels, improper waste handling and street trading remained major environmental challenges in the state.
He said maintaining a clean and healthy environment should not be left to the government alone, adding that residents, businesses, community leaders and other stakeholders also have roles to play.
The Permanent Secretary said the Ministry would continue with public sensitisation and stakeholder engagement while enforcing environmental laws where voluntary compliance fails.
LASG Calls for Community Participation on Waste Management
Tajudeen urged residents and community leaders to become Environmental Ambassadors by promoting responsible waste management practices within their communities.
He said community participation was necessary to support government efforts to improve environmental conditions across the state.
He also called on residents to work with government agencies and local authorities to ensure that waste was properly handled and disposed of through approved channels.
The Permanent Secretary said compliance with environmental laws was mandatory and urged residents to take responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean.
He further called on community leaders, businesses and other stakeholders in Alimosho to support efforts to make the area a model of environmental responsibility and community participation.
Alimosho Provides Two Waste Trucks
Also speaking at the programme, the Chairman of Alimosho Local Government, Hon. Akinpelu Ibrahim, called for strict compliance with environmental regulations, particularly in waste disposal and environmental sanitation.
Akinpelu disclosed that the Local Government had provided two waste trucks to improve waste collection and evacuation across the community.
He urged residents to support the initiative by disposing of their waste properly and using approved waste management channels.
The chairman warned residents against patronising cart pushers and unauthorised waste collectors, saying the use of unapproved waste disposal methods was against the law.
He said the provision of the trucks was part of efforts to improve waste collection in Alimosho and urged residents to cooperate with the Local Government.
LASG Warns Against Illegal Waste Disposal
The state government warned residents against indiscriminate waste disposal and illegal dumping, saying such practices could worsen environmental problems in communities.
Tajudeen identified blocked drainage channels and improper waste handling among the practices that could affect the environment and public health.
He said the government would continue to sensitise residents on proper waste management while taking enforcement action against those who violate environmental regulations.
Akinpelu also urged residents, businesses and community leaders to cooperate with the Local Government in maintaining environmental sanitation and supporting enforcement efforts.
He said keeping Alimosho clean required the joint efforts of the government, residents and other stakeholders, urging everyone to take responsibility for proper waste disposal.
