In a move to bolster the state’s creative economy and ensure world-class standards in public facilities, the Lagos State Government has conducted a comprehensive assessment of its key cultural assets.
On Tuesday, February 24, 2026, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Bopo Oyekan-Ismaila, led a high-powered delegation on an official inspection tour of the 405-seater Lagos Theatre, Igando, and the ongoing reconstruction at the Lagos Theatre, Oregun.
Assessing Operational Capacity at Igando
The tour commenced at the Lagos Theatre, Igando, where the team focused on evaluating the facility’s operational capacity and the state of its technical equipment. Accompanied by the Facility Manager, Mr. Segun Alawode, the Permanent Secretary examined the infrastructure to identify necessary technological upgrades.
The inspection aimed to ensure that the theatre remains a premier hub for creative expression, capable of hosting high-level productions that meet the evolving needs of the Lagos arts community.
Monitoring Progress at Oregun Reconstruction Site
Transitioning to the Lagos Theatre, Oregun, the delegation shifted focus to infrastructural development. The Project Architect, Mr. Tunde Joseph, provided a detailed walkthrough of the ongoing reconstruction works, highlighting the milestones achieved in the structural overhaul of the facility.
The Ministry’s leadership emphasized that these strategic investments are vital for maintaining the state’s status as the cultural capital of West Africa.
Commitment to Quality Service Delivery
Speaking during the exercise, Mrs. Bopo Oyekan-Ismaila underscored the government’s dedication to maintaining top-tier public utilities.
“This tour is essential for us to monitor the quality of ongoing works and ensure that our facilities are well-equipped to promote arts and culture. Our goal is to provide an optimal user experience for both performers and the public by ensuring every piece of equipment and infrastructure meets the highest standards,” the Permanent Secretary stated.
The Inspection Delegation
The Permanent Secretary was supported by a technical and administrative team, including Mr. Abimbola Ogunshote, Director of Facility Management, Mrs. Adenike Adebajo, Deputy Director, Audit Unit, Miss Idowu Amusan, Assistant Director, Tourism, Mrs. Oluwabunmi Ogunjobi and Miss Yetunde Baruwa, Senior Administration and Human Resource Officers.
The Ministry has reaffirmed that these inspections are part of a broader strategy to ensure optimal functionality across all state-owned creative spaces, fostering an environment where the creative industry can thrive.
