The Lagos State Health Service Commission has renewed its effort towards monitoring the activities of healthcare providers in all Public Hospitals in the state in order to ensure professionalism, delivery of quality healthcare and empathy towards patients.
This was stated on Monday by the Chairman, Health Service Commission, Dr. Bayo Aderiye during an interactive session with the management and staff of Shomolu General Hospital in Lagos.
According to Dr. Aderiye, the time has come for those who provide medical services in Government-owned hospitals to justify the huge investment of the Akinwunmi Ambode administration in the health sector by giving back their best to the patients at all times.
He said this is imperative moreso in view of negative reports recently emanating from the Press and social media with respect to alleged non-challance, apathy and other forms of unacceptable conduct of health workers which have continued to undermine the commitment of the government to providing access to qualitative and affordable medical services to Lagosians.
Dr Aderiye challenged health professionals to see themselves as having the rare privilege of giving hope of survival to their patients through their friendly disposition and passion rather than being lukewarm or even hostile, which further aggravates the patients’ conditions.
From now on, he said, unscheduled visits will be paid to all the 26 secondary healthcare facilities under the Lagos State Health Service Commission.
While noting that some of the complaints and allegations might have been exaggerated or sensationalised, the onus is on health workers to prove their worth by making most of their patients leave the hospital with pleasant experience as much as possible.
Other members of the commission namely; Dr. Monsurat Oyekan, Dr Tokunbo Oluwole, Otunba Seun Osikoya and Mrs. Kemi Ogunyemi, in their various comments, emphasized the need for all healthcare professionals in the Public health sector to translate Governor Ambode’s well thought-out programmes on health service delivery to reality.
While thanking the Chairman and the Commission members for the impromptu visit, the Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Fatai Ishola, promised on behalf of the hospital staff, that all hands will henceforth be on deck in order to ensure that health workers are more responsive and responsible in their conduct at all times.
He however sought the cooperation of the patients and members of the general public on the need to follow due process by abiding by hospital regulations.
He further urged members of the public to report dissatisfaction or any noted misdemeanor to the hospital authorities whenever they visit the hospital as modalities are always in place to ensure the smooth running of the hospital.
