In a decisive move to combat the rising tide of cardiovascular diseases, the Lagos State Health District V marked the 2026 World Hypertension Day by taking free medical services directly to the grassroots.
The agency hosted a comprehensive community outreach programme on Sunday at the Ilado-Tomaro Community in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area. Centered around the global theme, “Controlling Hypertension Together!” the initiative aimed to drive awareness, encourage early detection, and promote effective management of high blood pressure among local residents.
Sounding the Alarm on the ‘Silent Killer’
Addressing the gathering on behalf of the Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Health District V, Dr. Oladapo Asiyanbi, the Director of Medical Services and Disease Control delivered a stark reminder about the dangers of neglect.
“Hypertension remains one of the leading causes of cardiovascular diseases and other related health complications globally,” stated Dr. Ahmad Amina Bello. “Many individuals unknowingly live with the condition due to inadequate routine medical examinations and poor health-seeking behaviour. This is why it is popularly referred to as the ‘silent killer.’ We must embrace regular blood pressure checks and make healthier lifestyle choices if we want to win this fight.”
Dr. Ahmad further urged residents to adopt proactive habits, including regular physical exercise, reduced salt intake, balanced nutrition, the avoidance of alcohol, and routine medical screenings to prevent severe, life-threatening complications.
Strengthening Grassroots Healthcare
The event also served as a platform to reassure residents of the government’s long-term commitment to their well-being. Dr. Ahmad reaffirmed that Health District V remains dedicated to providing accessible and quality healthcare services across all Lagos communities through sustained public health education, robust advocacy, and continuous preventive interventions.
Prior to the clinical screenings, the Health Education Officer of the Amuwo-Odofin LGA, Mrs. Francisco Fiyin, conducted an interactive sensitisation session. She underscored the critical importance of individuals knowing their blood pressure status and warned against the dangers of leaving uncontrolled hypertension untreated. Mrs. Fiyin strongly advised residents to utilize their nearest Primary Health Care Centres for continuous medical evaluation, affordable treatment, and proper management.
Massive Turnout for Free Medical Screenings
The outreach saw a massive turnout, drawing active participation from healthcare workers, residents, and key stakeholders, including the Councillor of Ilado-Tomaro, Hon. Femi Iwakun, and various community leaders.
