Lagos Gets Modern Contraceptive Uptake Among Women

The Post Pregnancy Family Planning (PPFP) Project is supporting the Lagos state government to increase modern contraceptive uptake among women within the post-pregnancy period.

The project which is being implemented across 184 private health facilities within 19 Local Government Areas in Lagos State.

The projects’ key interventions include demand generation, and service delivery components with data use through research, monitoring, and evaluation as a cross-cutting component of each intervention.

It coincides with World Breastfeeding Week 2020 with the theme, “Support Breastfeeding for a Healthier Planet,” and at the period the world is witnessing COVID-19, a pandemic that threatens family health and planning.

“As the world celebrates the breastfeeding week, mothers should remember that breast milk offers the most nutritious and affordable infant meal, which the infant formula lacks. It also provides several benefits to the mother and baby.

“Breastfeeding supplies all the essential vitamins and minerals to babies in a form that can easily be absorbed, and has antibodies which helps to help fight infection
Evidence has shown that breastfed babies are healthier, and more likely to have fewer hospital visits,” the group said.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) and UNICEF urged governments to protect and promote women’s access to skilled breastfeeding counseling, a critical component of breastfeeding support.

The World Health Organization recommends that babies should be exclusively breastfed for the first six months, without food or water. Exclusive breastfeeding prevents ovulation which means an egg is not released each month, therefore pregnancy is not likely to occur. However, if exclusive breastfeeding is not properly practiced, ovulation will take place, and can lead to pregnancy.

Yes, If practiced as LAM (Lactational Amenorrhea Method) fulfilling “3” criteria:

i. If a woman has a baby less than 6 months old
ii. If her menstrual bleeding (menses/period) has not returned.
iii. If she breastfeeds her baby exclusively (day and night)
