In a decisive move to fortify the safety net for students across the state, the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education and the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) have entered a strategic partnership to overhaul child protection frameworks within the school system.

The collaboration was formalized on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, during a high-level strategic visit by Ministry officials to the DSVA headquarters.

Strengthening the Shield: A Unified Front

The delegation, led by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Dokunmu-Adegbite, emphasized that protecting the vulnerable requires more than just policy it requires active, intentional synergy between government bodies.

The engagement served as a critical platform to deepen existing protocols surrounding Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) and child safeguarding. Both agencies agreed that creating a safe school environment is a prerequisite for effective learning.

“Stronger systems are built through intentional partnerships,” noted a spokesperson for the DSVA. “This engagement marks another significant step toward ensuring that our schools are not just centers for academic excellence, but sanctuaries where students can learn without fear.”

Reporting Pathways and Early Intervention

A primary focus of the deliberations was the technical improvement of reporting pathways and referral mechanisms. Recognizing that educators are often the first line of defense, the partnership aims to equip educators with specialized tools to identify early warning signs of abuse, streamline the process for reporting cases to ensure they are handled promptly, professionally, and with strict confidentiality, and reinforce structured response systems to eliminate delays in seeking justice or support for survivors.

Sustainability and Accountability

The visit concluded with a reaffirmed commitment to proactive prevention rather than reactive measures. By focusing on continuous capacity building for teachers and administrators, the state aims to build a culture of accountability that permeates every classroom in Lagos.

As the state continues to scale its protection frameworks, this alignment between the education sector and the DSVA sets a new benchmark for inter-agency collaboration in the fight against domestic and sexual violence.
