In a strategic move to eradicate the culture of silence surrounding domestic abuse, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) held a grassroots sensitization program in the Arogangan community today.

The engagement, which focused on safety, accountability, and the urgency of reporting, brought together a diverse group of over 25 influential local stakeholders, including traditional chiefs, artisans, religious leaders, and market authorities.

Understanding Abuse and Support Pathways

During the session, DSVA representative Mr. Akinde Olatosin led an in-depth discussion on the multifaceted nature of violence. He identified physical, sexual, emotional, and economic abuse as key areas where community members must remain vigilant.

Olatosin provided a roadmap for survivors, detailing the reporting pathways and the holistic support services provided by the state government. A major highlight of the session was the emphasis on mandated reporters—individuals who, by virtue of their position, have a legal and moral duty to report suspected abuse.

Breaking the Culture of Silence

The initiative received strong backing from local leadership, who urged residents to move past the fear of social stigma.

“We must break the culture of silence,” stated Chief Ajayi Olajide during his address to the participants. “Timely reporting is critical in preventing further harm and ensuring that survivors have immediate access to the professional support they need.”

A Collective Responsibility

The DSVA reiterated that the fight against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) is not a solo effort but a shared commitment between the government and the governed. To facilitate immediate intervention, the agency encouraged the public to utilize the DSVA toll-free line: 08000-333-333.

By engaging community influencers, the Lagos State Government aims to create a protective network where active participation and collective responsibility serve as a shield for the most vulnerable citizens.
