The Badagry Local Government Area has declared seven days of mourning following the passing of the revered Akran of Badagry, His Royal Majesty De Wheno Aholu Menu Toyi I, who died on Monday, January 12, 2026.
The announcement was made by the Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Mr. Babatunde Hunpe, through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Kriko Augustine, on Tuesday. The declaration was made with the approval of Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
“With profound sorrow, I officially announce the passing of His Royal Majesty, De Wheno Aholu Menu Toyi I, the Akran of Badagry Kingdom. He peacefully joined his ancestors after a long, illustrious, dignified, and impactful reign devoted to peace, unity, and the preservation of Badagry’s rich cultural heritage,” the statement read.
Hunpe described the late monarch as a living bridge between the past and the future, a revered custodian of tradition, and a moral compass for the people of Badagry. He urged residents to reflect on the Akran’s selfless leadership, timeless values, and lifelong devotion to Badagry Local Government, Lagos State, and Nigeria during the mourning period.
The chairman also extended condolences to the Council of Obas and Chiefs in Badagry and Lagos State, the royal family, and the entire Badagry community.
In separate statements, former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed deep sorrow over the monarch’s death. The governor described the passing as a painful loss for Badagry, Lagos State, and the nation, noting that the transition marked the end of an era defined by wisdom, cultural preservation, and unwavering commitment to development.
Born into the royal lineage, Menu-Toyi ascended the throne on April 23, 1977, and served as the Permanent Vice-Chairman of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs. His reign lasted nearly 49 years, during which he earned respect for his dedication to peace, cultural heritage, and community development.
The seven-day mourning period is expected to provide the people of Badagry an opportunity to honour the late Akran’s legacy and commemorate his contributions to the kingdom and the broader Lagos State.
