Residents living in the coastal and low lines areas of Lagos State have been warned on the impending flooding with the release of water from the Lagco Dam in Cameroon.

The warning was contained in a statement released by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of the Environment, Oluwatoyin Onisarotu.

Onisarotu said this became necessary based on the outcome of the recent 2015 Flood Management Stakeholders Roundtable Meeting organized by the Federal Ministry of Environment in Abuja, where preparations were made for the forecast of the 2015 Flood Management Strategies.

He stated the release of excess water from the Lagco Dam might cause flooding that would affect the Benue River Basin and States like Adamawa and the Niger-Delta amongst others.

The Permanent Secretary advised residents within the coastal and low line areas prone to flooding, to ensure all canals and drains were properly taken care of, to allow free flow of water.

Likewise, they should discourage people from dumping refuse into the canals and drainages to avert causing havoc.
