Kimpact Development Initiative (KDI) organisers of the Nigeria Election Violence Report (NEVR) in the South West today released a press statement towards the 2019 General Elections scheduled for February 16 and March 2, 2019 at the at its conference hall in Osogbo, Osun State.
The organization informed the public of the various hotspots in the South West where there will be a possibility of election violence and advised the public to play by the rules as election dates approaches.
The NEVR Project in support by the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) focuses on developing the capacity of civil society to monitor, analyze and respond to incidents of election-related conflict before, during and after elections in Nigeria.
The organization does not only monitor but sensitizes the public by distributing awareness materials to members of the public and engage them in public education on what to do during the electioneering.
During it survey / observation and mapping which was carried out earlier this year, the organization identified some possible hotspot states in the South West such as: Ekiti, Ogun Ondo while Lagos and Oyo State were categorized as Red State due to their findings. It also noted that Osun could be relatively peaceful according to their findings.
The organization has put in place measures to curb any form of violence that may occur before, during and after the elections by deploying 106 trained personnel monitors across the South West who will be engaged in dialoguing disputes among groups of people in this zone. The organization went further in mounting billboard adverts depicting nonviolence during the election and also providing over 6000 pledge cards that will be circulated across board to get indigenes of these states committed to the peace initiative.
The organization however calls on the electoral umpire INEC and the security agencies to be impartial, political parties and their candidates and voters to maintain a peaceful atmosphere during the conduct of the election.
