The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has intensified training for political parties on financial compliance as part of preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The training, which took place in Lagos, focused on strengthening accountability, transparency, and adherence to existing electoral regulations guiding the financial activities of political parties.
It also forms part of INEC’s broader efforts to improve monitoring and enforcement of political party regulations, particularly in the area of campaign finance and reporting standards.
Participants at the workshop were exposed to key provisions of the Electoral Act and INEC’s updated Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties, with emphasis on compliance reporting and implementation procedures.
The sessions also featured practical training on the Political Finance Reporting and Audit System (PFRAS), where participants were taken through simulations covering income, expenditure, and annual financial reporting processes.
According to INEC, the use of digital tools like PFRAS is aimed at improving transparency, reducing infractions, and ensuring real-time monitoring of political party finances.
Facilitators explained that the system would also help strengthen audit processes and improve the credibility of financial disclosures by political parties.
The commission reiterated that political party compliance remains central to credible elections, stressing the need for parties to adhere strictly to financial reporting requirements.
INEC officials at the workshop noted that non-compliance with financial regulations would attract appropriate sanctions as provided by law.
The training is part of ongoing preparations by INEC to strengthen institutional capacity and ensure a more transparent and accountable electoral process ahead of the 2027 elections.
