INEC Publishes Tinubu, Peter Obi, Atiku Other Candidates’ Credentials for 2027 Election

TiTinuThe Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has published the personal particulars, academic credentials and other documents submitted by presidential candidates and other candidates contesting the 2027 general election.

The publication, carried out on Saturday, August 1, is part of the Commission’s revised Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 General Election and covers candidates seeking election into the offices of President, Senate and House of Representatives.

Among the presidential candidates whose documents were published are President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), as well as candidates of other political parties that successfully submitted their nomination forms.

The documents, contained in Form EC9, include candidates’ personal information, educational qualifications, employment history and sworn affidavits submitted to the Commission by their political parties.

Tinubu’s documents showed that he submitted a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Chicago State University, United States, where he graduated with honours on June 22, 1979. The records also included his NYSC discharge certificate, employment history at Mobil Nigeria Limited and his tenure as Governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007.

For Peter Obi and other presidential candidates, INEC made their submitted credentials and personal particulars available for public scrutiny in line with electoral requirements. The exercise also covers all candidates contesting Senate and House of Representatives seats across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

INEC said the publication is a statutory requirement aimed at promoting transparency in the electoral process and giving Nigerians the opportunity to examine information provided by candidates before the election.

The Commission said the exercise is backed by Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act, 2026, which requires it to publish candidates’ personal particulars within 21 days of receiving their nomination documents.

INEC added that under Section 29(5) of the Act, any person who believes that information submitted by a candidate is false can seek legal redress at the Federal High Court.

The Commission said the publication marks another step in preparations for the 2027 general election, with campaigns for presidential and National Assembly elections scheduled to begin on August 19, 2026.
