INEC Gives Certificates of Return to Bye-Election Winners

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially issued Certificates of Return to the politicians who emerged victorious in the legislative bye-elections conducted on June 20, 2026.

The presentation ceremony took place at the commission’s headquarters, covering successful candidates across five key states: Rivers, Enugu, Nasarawa, Ondo, and Kano.

Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, the Supervising National Commissioner for Rivers State, presented the legal documents to the winners. She stood in on behalf of the INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN.

INEC Charges Winners on Public Service

During her address at the presentation, Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu congratulated the newly elected lawmakers and reminded them of the core expectations of their democratic mandates. She emphasized that their primary focus must return immediately to the welfare of the citizens who voted them into office.

“The most important responsibility is to represent the people well,” Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu urged the recipients.

She further advised the politicians to look beyond party lines and serve their respective constituencies with absolute diligence and transparency.

Pending Certificates for Ekiti and Kebbi States

The electoral umpire also clarified that the issuance of certificates is an ongoing exercise across areas where recent elections were concluded.

According to Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu, the commission has already finalized plans to extend the presentations to outstanding areas. In the coming days, official Certificates of Return will also be presented to winners in Kebbi State for the Zuru State Constituency legislative election, alongside the winner of the highly anticipated Ekiti State Governorship election.
