Atiku Abubakar, the former vice president and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has opted for Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta as his running mate for the 2023 presidential election.
Announcing his decision in a statement on Thursday Mr Atiku said his running mate Mr Okowa possessed all qualities needed to support and revive the country’s economy, provide security and improve the country’s deteriorating education system.
“I am pleased, therefore, to announce here my choice of Running Mate who will help to lead us to victory next year not only in the Presidential election but also in the governorship and legislative elections. And he will be by my side as I work hard every day to provide our people with security, revive our economy, improve education and unite our country. He has both Legislative and Executive experiences. Please join me in welcoming to the ticket the next Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Governor Dr. Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa,” Mr Atiku said.
He further described his running mate as a fighter that cares about winning and good governance.
Mr. Okowa, who has been governor since 2015, was chosen from among the South-East and South-South regions’ serving governors and highly profiled politicians.
After a close race with Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers, Mr Okowa was declared the running mate for Atiku. The decision was thought to be in the party’s best interests as it seeks to retake power from the ruling APC next year.
