Harmattan Public Service Broadcast in Lagos Nigeria has released important heads-up tips about how Lagosians can cope with barrage of winds and dryness brought upon the country by harmattan season.
According to the report released by the broadcast team, it claims the weather in Lagos suddenly changed, heralding the arrival of harmattan.
It further added that in the mornings it’s cold, and very hot/humid in the afternoon. These dramatic changes in the weather pose many health risks such as higher risk of upper respiratory infections as a result of inhalation of dust, epistaxis – which in other words is bleeding through the nose as a result of humid air that cause blood vessels in the nose to break, dehydration due to dry air or humidity, eye infections like conjunctivitis due to dryness and dust.
Other health risks are: Sore throat, dry skin, cracked lips and other lesions; high tendency of bleeding, poor water hygiene may also occur leading to other gastrointestinal problems like vomiting and diarrhoea.
The broadcast team however gave the following recommendations for protecting one’s health. Namely, taking the following preventive measures:
1. Cover up! Wear protective clothes such as jackets, trousers, socks and stockings/tights wherever appropriate and necessary
2. Drink more water
3. Moisturise! Moisturise! Moisturise! Feed your skin. You can use any body option or cream like Shea butter. Apply on areas that are prone to dryness like the lips, hair, face heals of the foot etc.
