In a landmark move to transition Northern Nigeria from fragility to stability, the seven governors of the North-West geopolitical zone have officially endorsed the North-West Peace & Security Development Framework (2026–2030).
Supported by the German Government and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the roadmap represents a unified strategy to dismantle the root causes of regional insecurity.
The endorsement, finalized during a high-level meeting of the North-West Governors’ Forum (NWGF) on March 26, 2026, signals a shift toward regionally owned solutions. Since 2022, Germany has committed €15 million to bolster this transition, focusing on long-term resilience rather than short-term fixes.
A Strategic Blueprint for Regional Stability
The newly adopted framework is designed to move beyond traditional security measures by integrating inclusive development and economic empowerment. Key pillars of the 2026–2030 plan include rebuilding communities displaced by conflict, creating sustainable economic opportunities to steer youth away from crime, strengthening the fractured relationship between local populations and security forces, and enhancing the capacity of state institutions to provide essential services.
International Partnership and Local Ownership
The German Embassy in Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to the region, emphasizing that sustainable peace is only possible through strong governance and community-led initiatives. The partnership with the UNDP ensures that the framework aligns with international development standards while remaining firmly under the leadership of the seven North-West governors.

As the region moves into the implementation phase, the €15 million commitment from Germany will serve as a catalyst for unlocking further investments aimed at transforming the North-West into a hub for inclusive growth and lasting security.
