In a major move to fulfill President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to drastically reduce preventable maternal and infant deaths, the Federal Government has officially commenced the rollout of Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (CEmONC) equipment, essential medicines, and medical commodities across Nigeria.
The nationwide intervention kicked off at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) in Bauchi State. This massive deployment is being executed under the Health Sector Renewal Programme through the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative (NHSRII), the Sector-Wide Approach (SWAp), and the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII). The coordinated framework aims to strengthen emergency referral channels and substantially improve survival outcomes for mothers and newborns.
Federal Government’s Resolve on Healthcare Access
Speaking at the launch ceremony, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, emphasized that the deployment is a direct reflection of the administration’s determination to bring quality care to every Nigerian.
“This intervention reflects the Federal Government’s resolve to ensure that every woman and every newborn has access to timely, quality, and life-saving healthcare, regardless of location,” Prof. Pate stated.
The Minister further revealed that sustained investments in primary healthcare infrastructure, workforce training, and emergency systems have yielded massive results, with more than 45 million Nigerians now accessing primary healthcare every quarter. Under the newly established Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Compact, the Federal Government is actively supporting states with direct financing, technical assistance, and strategic investments to accelerate health outcomes.
Boosting Emergency Medical Infrastructure in Bauchi
The initial phase of the rollout will directly benefit 15 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Bauchi State, upgrading services across primary, secondary, and tertiary health facilities. The intervention package features the distribution of over 17,000 maternity delivery kits, 15 tricycle ambulances, and six fully equipped standard ambulances designed to manage severe pregnancy-related complications and ensure safer deliveries.
Reacting to the development, the Executive Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, commended the federal initiative and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sustaining a strong partnership with the central government to uplift maternal and child healthcare in the state.
Accountability and Mutual Reform
Highlighting the structural framework of the project, the National Coordinator of SWAp, Dr. Muntaqa Umar-Sadiq, noted that the intervention showcases the practical execution of a shared reform agenda.
He stated that the Federal Government, the 36 states, and the FCT are operating under a system anchored on mutual accountability, coordinated financing, and measurable results to ensure investments translate directly to superior service delivery.
Concluding the event, Prof. Pate congratulated the graduating National Health Fellows from Bauchi State. He issued a stern warning regarding the management of the newly deployed assets, urging local authorities to ensure that all equipment, medicines, and commodities are used strictly for their intended purpose, without diversion or informal charges.
