The Federal Government has expanded the Implementation Monitoring Committee (IMC) to track the implementation of agreements with organised labour and address outstanding issues across universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.
The initiative, led by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, is aimed at improving accountability, resolving labour-related concerns and maintaining industrial harmony in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.
The minister announced this on Wednesday in Abuja during the inauguration of the expanded committee, stressing the need for effective monitoring and timely fulfilment of government commitments to labour unions.
FG Targets Timely Implementation of Agreements
Alausa said sustained oversight, accountability and prompt resolution of outstanding commitments were necessary to ensure that agreements reached with labour unions translated into concrete action.
He attributed the agreements negotiated with 16 labour unions in approximately one year to a consolidated negotiation structure that improved coordination and institutional memory.
According to him, the expanded committee will monitor the implementation of government commitments, identify obstacles and refer unresolved matters to the appropriate authorities for action.
The committee comprises representatives of the Federal Ministries of Education, Labour and Employment, Justice, and Finance, alongside relevant government agencies.
The arrangement is expected to improve coordination among government institutions and provide a framework for tracking progress on agreements reached with unions in the tertiary education sector.
Minister Urges Dialogue and Shared Responsibility
The Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’idu Ahmad, urged stakeholders to embrace constructive dialogue and shared responsibility in addressing labour-related issues.
She emphasised the importance of cooperation among government officials, institutional management and labour unions in resolving disputes and maintaining stability across the education sector.
Committee Plans Five Sectoral Monitoring Teams
The Chairman of the Implementation Monitoring Committee, Senator Olarewaju Tejuoso, announced plans to establish five standing Sectoral Implementation Monitoring Committees.
The proposed committees will focus on sector-specific concerns and monitor the implementation of agreed commitments, providing a more structured approach to addressing issues affecting different categories of tertiary institutions.
The sectoral arrangement is also expected to help identify implementation challenges and improve follow-up on agreements reached between the government and organised labour.
FG Reaffirms Commitment to Industrial Harmony
The Federal Ministry of Education reaffirmed its commitment to improving labour relations and maintaining uninterrupted academic activities across the country’s tertiary institutions.
The expansion of the monitoring committee forms part of the government’s stated efforts to sustain a stable and productive tertiary education system in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The ministry said the initiative would strengthen accountability in the implementation of agreements and help protect teaching, learning and research from disruptions arising from unresolved labour disputes.
