The Federal Government has solidified its commitment to transforming Nigeria’s livestock sector through a strategic partnership with the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA).
The collaboration aims to pioneer large-scale dairy production and processing, signaling a shift toward self-sufficiency and reduced reliance on imports.
Strengthening the Value Chain
During a recent consultative meeting in Abuja, the Honourable Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, emphasized that the Ministry is prepared to provide comprehensive technical backing. To ensure the project’s success, the Minister announced the formation of a Technical Working Committee comprised of ministry experts who will collaborate directly with the NSIA.
The Minister highlighted that this committee is tasked with developing clear modalities, creating innovative product concepts, and establishing a robust monitoring framework to track the project’s progress against global benchmarks.
“We will ensure the deployment of a Technical Working Committee to work closely with the NSIA team, facilitating access to critical infrastructure such as power and energy to ensure Nigeria achieves global best practices in dairy production,” Minister Maiha stated.
Strategic Alignment with NL-GAS
The initiative is a core component of the National Livestock Growth Acceleration Strategy (NL-GAS). This broader federal agenda focuses on strengthening rural economies and promoting sustainable development by modernizing the livestock industry.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Chinyere Ijeoma Akujobi, lauded the NSIA’s forward-thinking approach, noting that the Ministry’s support is geared toward ensuring the long-term sustainability of the dairy sector.
The UK Dairy Project and Local Expansion
Iruansi Itoandon, Senior Vice President of the NSIA, detailed the ongoing efforts regarding the UK Dairy Project. This specific investment seeks to overhaul the dairy value chain by focusing on livestock productivity and sustainable milk production systems.
Highlighting current progress in Nasarawa State, the NSIA delegation noted that significant strides have been made in modernizing farming practices. Key areas of focus for the partnership include:
-
Genetic Improvement: Enhancing cattle breeds for higher milk yields.
-
Resource Management: Improving feed availability and pasture management.
-
Capacity Building: Implementing training programs for farmers and extension officers.
Itoandon noted that the project is designed to foster a synergy between government institutions, private investors, and international partners to build a foundation for modern dairy infrastructure. The Technical Working Committee is expected to begin an immediate review of these initiatives to provide actionable recommendations for national scaling.
