The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have formalized a strategic partnership aimed at guaranteeing a credible, transparent, and fraud-free process in the upcoming 2027 general elections. This critical understanding was reached during a high-profile courtesy visit by the newly deployed Edo State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Obo Effanga, to the EFCC’s Benin Zonal Directorate.
Speaking on the motivation behind the engagement, Effanga emphasized the necessity of uniting with key law enforcement bodies as the nation prepares for the next electoral cycle. He noted that the commission is actively mapping out collaborative strategies to protect the integrity of the ballot box, specifically targeting financial malpractice at the polls.
“We are engaging with critical stakeholders, including law enforcement agencies, as the 2027 general election approaches. This visit is to explore areas of further collaboration, especially since the EFCC has always played a significant role in seeking to curtail vote buying during elections,” Effanga stated.
EFCC Vows Strict Surveillance on Electoral Malpractice
Responding to the delegation, the Acting Zonal Director and Deputy Commander of the EFCC (DCE), Sa’ad Hanafi Sa’ad, reaffirmed the anti-graft agency’s unwavering commitment to sanitizing the electoral process. He assured the public that the EFCC would deploy its full tactical apparatus to monitor financial flows and eliminate the influence of dirty money in Nigerian politics.
“The Commission will continue to partner with INEC in discharging its mandate of curtailing the incidence of vote buying before and during the election. The EFCC remains resolute in ensuring that the will of the people is not compromised by financial inducement,” Sa’ad remarked.
Chartered Institute of Bankers Pledges Support to Fight Financial Crime
In a separate but related development, the leadership of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), Edo State Branch, also visited the Benin Zonal Directorate to reinforce the financial sector’s alliance with the anti-graft agency. Led by the branch Chairman, Ibukun Akande, the banking institute underscored the critical overlap between banking operations and the EFCC’s mandate to eradicate economic crimes.
“Our visit is to seek robust areas of collaboration with the EFCC. The Commission’s mandate is to deal with economic and financial crimes, which unfortunately often revolve around banks and bankers. We want to ensure our industry remains hostile to illicit financial flows,” Akande noted.
Acknowledging the bankers’ visit, DCE Sa’ad Hanafi Sa’ad thanked the CIBN leadership for their proactive stance. He reiterated that a corruption-free society requires absolute synergy among all professional bodies, affirming that the EFCC will always collaborate with relevant stakeholders to institutionalize transparency and accountability across both the public and private sectors.
