In a major push to accelerate regional integration, economic growth, and cross-border security, the ECOWAS Commission signed two landmark strategic cooperation agreements with the International Fertilizer Development Centre (IFDC) and the Mano River Union (MRU) on July 17, 2026.
The signing ceremony took place on the sidelines of the 2026 ECOWAS Mid-Year Statutory Meetings in Freetown, Sierra Leone. The agreements signal a unified effort to address West Africa’s pressing agricultural challenges, climate risks, and regional security concerns.
Transforming West African Agriculture and Soil Health
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with the IFDC establishes a comprehensive framework to transform agricultural productivity throughout the region. The partnership focuses heavily on sustainable soil fertility management, modernizing fertilizer supply chains, and scaling climate-smart agricultural practices to shield farmers from environmental volatility.
Furthermore, the pact directly supports the implementation of the Lomé and Nairobi Declarations on Fertilizer and Soil Health. By aligning regional policies, the alliance aims to build long-term resilience within West African farming systems, boosting overall food and nutrition security across member states.
Strengthening Regional Peace and Natural Resource Management
The second strategic accord, signed with the Mano River Union, targets deeper institutional synergy to maintain political stability and spur joint economic growth. The agreement prioritizes cross-border governance, peacebuilding protocols, and the sustainable management of shared natural resources throughout the Mano River Basin and the wider ECOWAS zone.
“This partnership underscores our shared commitment to promoting regional peace, stability, and socio-economic development while reinforcing integration efforts across our borders,” stated H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, following the signing.
Leadership Alignment for Regional Impact
The high-level ceremony brought together senior executive leadership from all three international bodies. President Touray signed the accords on behalf of the ECOWAS Commission, while Mr. Thiam Bayella, Chief Operating Officer, represented the IFDC. Ambassador Simeon Moribah, Secretary-General of the Mano River Union, signed on behalf of the MRU.
Together, the two pacts lay down an actionable roadmap to accelerate socio-economic development and safeguard political stability across West Africa.
