The ECOWAS Administration and Finance Committee (AFC) officially commenced its 39th meeting in Freetown, Sierra Leone, on July 12, 2026. The high-level gathering brings together delegates from across ECOWAS Member States and various Community Institutions to deliberate on pressing administrative, financial, and institutional matters.
Scheduled to run from July 12 to 14, 2026, the three-day session is heavily focused on evaluating comprehensive reports regarding human resources, budget execution, and overall institutional performance to ensure greater regional efficiency.
Strengthening Regional Integration and Accountability
The primary objective of the meeting is to generate strategic recommendations that will enhance the transparency, accountability, and operational effectiveness of ECOWAS Institutions. As the bloc pushes forward with its regional integration agenda, the AFC’s review of fiscal and management policies remains critical to sustaining cross-border development programs.
Speaking during the opening ceremony, the Vice President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Mrs. Damtien L. TCHINTCHIBIDJA, highlighted the historical weight of the current discussions, noting how the bloc’s recent milestones intersect with its future hurdles.
“The ECOWAS Golden Jubilee has provided an opportunity not only to celebrate the Community’s achievements but also to reflect on its challenges and future aspirations,” H.E. Mrs. Damtien L. TCHINTCHIBIDJA, Vice President of the ECOWAS Commission stated.
Commending Institutional Oversight and Performance
Furthering the emphasis on institutional progress, the Commissioner for Internal Services at the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Habibu Yaya BAPPAH, lauded the AFC for its rigorous and consistent oversight functions. He pointed out that the committee’s strict adherence to diligence and practical recommendations has been a cornerstone in positioning ECOWAS as one of Africa’s top-performing regional economic communities.
Sierra Leone Reaffirms Commitment to Regional Unity
Formally declaring the session open, the Chair of the AFC, Mr. Komba MOMOH, reiterated Sierra Leone’s dedication to the core missions of the West African bloc. He emphasized the host nation’s readiness to collaborate closely with all Member States and Community Institutions to actively foster regional integration, peace, security, and sustainable economic growth.
The AFC remains a foundational pillar within the ECOWAS institutional framework. By holding the vital responsibility of managing community resources prudently and enforcing strict accountability mechanisms, the committee’s final resolutions from Freetown will directly impact the credibility and long-term sustainability of interventions across West Africa.
