Marking the International Day of the African Child, Amnesty International Nigeria has raised a grim alarm over the persistent wave of school attacks and student abductions across the country. The human rights organization highlighted a heartbreaking reality gripping states like Ogun, Kwara, Kogi, Borno, and Oyo, where classrooms are increasingly defined by the absence of students who have been forced into captivity or driven away by fear.
These vacant seats, according to the group, represent stolen potential and shattered dreams. Instead of learning and playing, thousands of Nigerian children are currently trapped in a cycle of insecurity, leaving families devastated and the nation’s educational system under severe siege.
A Call for Solidarity and Immediate Action
In a passionate demonstration of solidarity, members of Amnesty International Nigeria stood with the families of children whose lives and education have been violently disrupted by conflict. The organization stressed that the continuous targeting of educational institutions serves as a painful reminder that the country’s youth remain profoundly vulnerable.
“Continuing attacks on schools and abduction of children are painful reminders that Nigerian children remain at risk, and urgent action is needed to protect them,” Amnesty International Nigeria stated.
The human rights watchdog emphasized that the current state of insecurity is unacceptable, noting that the fundamental right to safety and education is being stripped away from an entire generation.
Direct Appeal to President Tinubu
Directing its frustration at the highest level of government, Amnesty International issued an urgent, direct appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The group declared that Nigerian children cannot wait any longer for the government to fulfill its primary responsibility of protecting its citizens.
The organization is demanding immediate, concrete steps from the presidency to bring every child in captivity home safely. Furthermore, they are calling on the federal government to aggressively strengthen community security and fortify schools against future invasions, reiterating that every single child is precious and represents the indispensable future of the nation.
