Dataphyte Foundation has announced the upcoming release of Gender Disparities: Democratic Realities and Governance Outcomes in Nigeria, a comprehensive report examining the persistent underrepresentation of women across political and corporate leadership spaces in the country. The publication is scheduled for release on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, and seeks to inform discussions around improving women’s participation ahead of the next election cycle.
The report combines data analysis, case studies, and archival research to demonstrate how limited female representation continues to shape Nigeria’s governance and development trajectory. It highlights structural barriers, social norms, and policy gaps that prevent women from attaining leadership roles, emphasizing that greater inclusion is critical for equitable decision-making and sustainable development.
Key findings reveal Nigeria’s low international ranking in female cabinet representation, a steady decline in legislative seats occupied by women, and systemic hurdles that prevent women from fully participating in governance. The report argues that excluding women from decision-making undermines democratic outcomes and slows national development.
Lucy Okonkwo, the author of the report, noted: “Recent incidents, like the debate involving Senator Natasha in the National Assembly, underscore why equal representation of women is crucial. A more balanced legislature could lead to different policy outcomes that better reflect the needs of all citizens.”
