The government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has officially declared the end of the Mpox outbreak as a national public health emergency. This announcement marks a significant turning point for the nation, which has been at the epicenter of the viral surge that drew global concern over the past year.
The successful containment of the emergency was the result of a massive, coordinated effort led by the Africa CDC, the World Health Organization (WHO), and the continental Incident Management Support Team (IMST). These organizations provided a critical lifeline to the DRC, deploying technical experts, essential medical supplies, and life-saving vaccines to bolster local healthcare infrastructure and streamline the emergency response.
A Strategic Victory, Not a Final End
While the emergency status has been lifted, health officials are urging the public and the international community to remain vigilant. The distinction between ending the immediate crisis and eradicating the pathogen was a central theme of the government’s announcement.
“This is a victory against the outbreak, not against the virus,” stated Hon. Dr. Roger Samuel Kamba, the DRC’s Minister of Public Health, Hygiene, and Social Welfare.
His remarks underscore the reality that while the rapid spread has been throttled, the virus remains a latent threat in the region, requiring permanent adjustments to the country’s health protocols.
Shifting to Sustained Vigilance
With the formal emergency concluded, the DRC is now transitioning into a phase of sustained surveillance. The Ministry of Health confirmed that the strategy will shift from crisis management to targeted vaccination campaigns designed to protect high-risk populations and prevent any potential resurgence of the disease.
The Africa CDC has reaffirmed its commitment to the nation, stating that it remains fully engaged in monitoring the situation. The focus will now remain on strengthening long-term epidemiological tracking to ensure that the DRC can detect and suppress any new clusters before they escalate into another national crisis.
