Checkmated by Death! By Chxta

Amaka_Igwe_673844664One of the best sitcoms that Nigeria ever produced was the early 1990s drama, Checkmate. To my admittedly young mind at the time, the plot was intriguing enough to keep me, who likes not much on television other than football and news, engrossed until the sitcom came to its logical conclusion. However, that was not just the story of Checkmate. The creative brain behind the series realised the potential of one of its sub-plots, and spun it off into the rather successful Fuji House Of Commotion, which to my knowledge, is the only time in Nigeria’s media space, that we have ever had a successful spin-off. News that that brain, Amaka Igwe, has passed, broke yesterday. May the Almighty grant her rest, and to her family, the fortitude to bear the loss.

Maybe it will be a fitting tribute to Amaka, if someone can make a well researched sitcom about the show that is Nigeria. Fresh from yesterday’s confusion over will they, will they not, an Abuja court has denied that it ever stopped the Lower House from probing that beautiful lady. Frankly, this particular piece of news has me scratching my brains directly. I can swear that I heard Lower House babariga, Aminu Tambuwal saying that the House will respect the court judgement and stop the probe. On Channels TV last night. Maybe my thought process was on suspension.

Suspension being the state of the Contract Sharing Committee today. Yes, the Prez has decided that no contracts will be shared today given that the Veep’s bro left the mortal coil a few days ago. I wish him a peaceful rest. But I have to point out, painful as it is, the suspension of the CSC’s weekly shindig really shows the contempt with which our elite look at us. There was a bomb in Nyanya, 200+ of our girls have been spirited away, and nary a flag at half mast. The brother of a big man croaks, and the business of government stops! This says a lot. I make good to say that if the 200+ girls had been located in Asokoro or Maitama, they’d have been found by now.

I lie, they would not even have been kidnapped.
