The Presidency has said that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) cannot be achieved by government alone as the private sector is pivotal and fundamental in achieving it’s success.
Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDG, Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire in her address at the stakeholders retreat on implementation of SDGs disclosed that the effectiveness of the partnership between the government and private sector will depend on building strong links to national, states and local actors and initiatives.
She stressed that the importance of multilevel and multi sectoral partnerships and collaboration cannot be overemphasised as the government commences domestication, mainstreaming, integration and prioritisation of the SDGs.
She said” it’s a well established fact that the SDGS cannot be achieved by government alone but it will take a coordinated effort of many groups such as the private sector, the civil society, media, academia, youths, women groups, faith based organisations.
“The effectiveness of these partnerships will depend on building strong links to national, states and local actors and initiatives, collective long – term commitments linked to SDG achievement and ensuring transparency and accountability for results.
“The CSO and NGOs can play critical roles in advancing these goals by effectively articulating the needs and aspirations of the poor, fulfilling critical service delivery gaps and promoting good governance and accountability.
“The role of the private sector is not solely centred on financing and investments but pivotal and fundamental in achieving success in the SGD.”
She noted that drawing from the lessons learnt in the implementation of the MDGs, it is evident that early commencement, strong political will, high level of support from legislators, local ownership, multilevel partnerships, coordination and synergy among the three tiers of government are some of the factors necessary to achieve the SDGs.
