Burundi’s President, Pierre Nkurunziza, has died.
Nkurunziza died at the age of 55 at the Karusi Hospital in Burundi.
His death was confirmed by the government on Twitter saying he died from a heart attack.
“The Government of the Republic of Burundi announces with great sadness the unexpected death of His Excellency Pierre Nkurunzuza, President of the Republic of Burundi, at the Karusi Fiftieth Anniversary Hospital following a cardiac arrest on June 8, 2020,” the tweet reads.
An unverified source who spoke to DNN said First Lady Denise was airlifted to Nairobi 10 days ago, reportedly ill with #Covid19, leading some to speculate Nkurunziza too might have been infected.
The country would observe seven days of mourning beginning Tuesday
