A Primary Healthcare Centre (PHC) in Mbayande, Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue State, has been described as grossly inadequate and unfit for medical service delivery, sparking concerns among residents and stakeholders.

The facility is reportedly lacking basic infrastructure, including wards, toilets, and essential medical equipment, leaving healthcare workers with no option but to attend to patients in open spaces.

Patients Forced to Seek Care Outdoors

According to a statement circulating on social media and addressed to Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, treatments at the PHC are conducted under a tree, exposing patients and medical personnel to harsh environmental conditions.

“PHC Mbayande in Makurdi LGA, Benue State is in a deplorable state, with no functional infrastructure, no ward, no toilets or medical equipment. Treatments are conducted under a tree,” the statement read.

Residents Turn to Self-Medication

The situation has reportedly forced many residents, particularly those unable to afford private healthcare, to resort to self-medication, raising fears of worsening health outcomes in the community.

“Community members that cannot afford private care have largely resorted to self-medication,”the statement added.

Call for Urgent Government Action

Stakeholders have called on the Benue State Government and the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) to take immediate steps to address the crisis.

“We implore your office, the Benue State Government, and the NPHCDA to facilitate the construction of this facility,” the appeal stated.

Observers warn that without swift intervention, the condition of the facility could further endanger lives and undermine primary healthcare delivery in the area.
