Visible progress is finally being recorded on the Auchi–Igarra–Ibillo–Isua federal road, a strategic artery connecting Edo State to Ondo and Lagos.

As of Monday, emergency palliative interventions have commenced to address the severe deterioration that has long plagued the route.

The ongoing works aim to restore immediate motorability, providing much-needed breathing room for transporters and local businesses. This corridor serves as a vital economic lifeline, facilitating the movement of agricultural produce and inter-state trade across Southern Nigeria. For years, the dilapidated state of the road has led to increased transportation costs and crippled rural economies.

A Call for Sustained Infrastructure Investment

While the current intervention has been met with optimism, stakeholders emphasize that this must be the beginning of a broader state-wide infrastructure drive. Experts argue that road quality is directly linked to regional security and food stability.

“The rehabilitation of this road is a commendable step toward easing the hardship of our people. However, sustained investment in our road networks remains the only way to unlock the state’s full economic potential and ensure the safety of every traveler,” noted a project monitor during the site visit.

The Link Between Roads and Security

The report highlights a growing concern: deplorable roads create security vulnerabilities. Isolated and inaccessible stretches often become hotspots for criminal activities, including kidnapping. By fixing these transit points, the government can improve security presence through faster response times, enhance farm-to-market access, allowing farmers to transport goods without heavy losses, and strengthen local livelihoods by reducing travel time and vehicle maintenance costs.

The call remains urgent for the government to extend this level of attention to other deplorable routes across the state to ensure long-term stability and growth.
