The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has officially welcomed the successful conclusion of the elections for the President and Bureau Members of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP).
The elections, held in Midrand, Republic of South Africa, mark a significant transition for the legislative arm of the African Union.
New Leadership and Regional Representation
In a formal statement, Chairperson Youssouf extended his warm congratulations to H.E. Fateh Boutbig on his election as the new President of the Pan-African Parliament.
He also recognized the newly elected Members of the Bureau, noting that the group effectively represents all regions of the continent, ensuring a diverse and inclusive leadership structure.
A Tribute to Outgoing Service
The Chairperson took the opportunity to pay tribute to the outgoing President, H.E. Fortune Charumbira. Youssouf praised Charumbira for his dedicated service and his significant efforts in advancing the role of the Parliament within the African Union’s broader governance architecture, laying the groundwork for the institution’s current momentum.
Upholding Democratic Principles
Reflecting on the voting process, the Chairperson noted that the orderly and transparent conduct of the elections serves as a testament to the continent’s dedication to the African Union’s Constitutive Act.

Representing H.E. Évariste Ndayishimiye, President of the Republic of Burundi and Chairperson of the African Union, Youssouf oversaw the electoral proceedings and the official oath of office for the new members.
As the PAP enters this new chapter, the AUC Chairperson expressed full confidence in the incoming leadership’s ability to lead with integrity and unity of purpose. He reaffirmed the Commission’s unwavering support for ongoing institutional reforms aimed at strengthening the legislative authority and effectiveness of the Parliament in its mission to serve the African continent.
