The African Union (AU) has issued a blistering condemnation following a wave of coordinated terrorist attacks in Zamfara State, Northwestern Nigeria, which left dozens dead and many others in captivity.
In a statement released Monday, the African Union Commission expressed profound shock and sadness over the escalating violence targeting innocent populations in the region.
A Grave Violation of Human Rights
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, denounced the attacks perpetrated on February 21, 2026 which resulted in the killing of more than 50 civilians. Beyond the fatalities, the assault involved the abduction of several women and children, a tactic the AU described as a grave violation of human rights.
The Chairperson was unequivocal in his stance, stating that the AU rejects all forms of violent extremism that threaten the peace and stability of the continent.
Call for Immediate Action and Release
Addressing the plight of those taken during the raid, Chairperson Youssouf demanded the immediate, safe, and unconditional release of all captives. He underscored the need for a more aggressive, unified approach to regional security to prevent such tragedies from becoming a recurring theme.
“The African Union unequivocally rejects all acts of terrorism and violent extremism against civilian populations, particularly women and children, as grave violations of human rights and serious threats to peace, security, and stability,” Youssouf stated.
Solidarity with the Federal Republic of Nigeria
The AU head reaffirmed the organization’s full solidarity with the Government and people of Nigeria. While conveying heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, he also extended his wishes for a swift recovery to those injured in the coordinated strikes.
The Commission reaffirmed its unwavering support for Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts, urging for strengthened and collective action among member states to protect civilian populations and restore lasting peace to the West African region.
