The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced a two-day technical workshop focused on integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into Nigeria’s electoral management system. Organized in collaboration with the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), the initiative aims to enhance operational efficiency and bolster the integrity of the nation’s voting processes.
The workshop, held under the leadership of INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, brings together senior ICT personnel and development partners to explore how emerging technologies can support transparent and inclusive elections. Participants are examining a broad range of topics, including AI fundamentals, global use cases, and the specific challenges posed by misinformation and disinformation.
During the opening sessions, Amb. Abdu Abdussamadu Zango, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Kano State, described AI as a double-edged sword. He noted that while the technology offers significant potential to improve public confidence and security, it also requires strict governance to prevent misuse. Reflecting on the 2023 General Election, Zango warned that digital platforms have previously been used to spread misinformation, making vigilance essential as AI tools become more accessible.
Representing the Director of ICT, Deputy Director Engr. Lawal Umar stated that the workshop marks a milestone in the Commission’s technological evolution. He highlighted that AI could streamline voter registration, logistics planning, and fraud detection, provided the applications remain secure and aligned with Nigeria’s legal framework.
Seray Jah, the IFES Regional Director for Africa and Country Director for Nigeria, served as the lead facilitator. He suggested that Nigeria’s approach to these technologies could provide a blueprint for the rest of the continent.
“Nigeria is the giant of Africa, and the successful deployment of Artificial Intelligence within INEC could serve as a model for other countries in West Africa and across the continent,” Jah said.
The training sessions are also being facilitated by Mr. Obaje Ukeh, IFES Kenya Country Director, and Ms. Judith Toryem, IFES Nigeria Project Manager. Together, the partners aim to move beyond theoretical discussions to develop practical, well-governed AI applications that safeguard the democratic process.
