The political landscape of Somolu-Bariga witnessed a seismic shift on Thursday, May 14, 2026, as a massive wave of All Progressives Congress (APC) supporters descended upon the Shepherd Hill Open Ground in Obanikoro.

The carnival-like atmosphere marked the official campaign flag-off of Hon. Abdul Hameed Salawu, popularly known as “Dullar,” ahead of the highly anticipated House of Representatives primary election.

A Grassroots Movement Ignited

The rally, which drew a diverse crowd of grassroots mobilizers, market leaders, artisans, and youth groups, served as a resounding endorsement of Salawu’s candidacy. Chants of solidarity echoed across the venue as party faithful from across the Somolu Federal Constituency declared the former local government chairman the most prepared aspirant to represent their interests at the National Assembly.

Supporters cited his accessibility and proven track record in local administration as the primary drivers behind the overwhelming turnout. The event effectively transformed from a political gathering into a celebration of Salawu’s established political strength and widespread communal acceptance.

Vision for the National Assembly

While addressing the energized crowd, Hon. Abdul Hameed Salawu emphasized that his federal ambition is rooted in a desire to scale up the developmental achievements recorded during his tenure as the Executive Chairman of Somolu Local Government. He highlighted his previous successes in road construction, infrastructural renewal, and youth-focused interventions as a blueprint for his proposed federal representation.

“I stand before you ready to do more for our people at the federal level through quality representation, effective legislation, and sustainable constituency projects,” Salawu stated. “This election is about progress and the future of our constituency. I urge all our supporters to come out peacefully and make their voices count.”

Stakeholders Affirm Leadership Credentials

Prominent leaders within the party used the platform to vouch for Salawu’s character and administrative competence. Alhaji Olasimbo Bakare, an APC chieftain, described the aspirant as a humble leader who consistently prioritizes peace and grassroots development.

Echoing this sentiment, Alhaja Ashake Adetutu Alausa praised Salawu’s long-standing support for market women and the vulnerable. She noted that his impact was felt long before his time in office, stating:

“Dullar changed the face of Somolu. He improved roads, upgraded markets, and empowered many residents. We strongly believe he will deliver even greater dividends of democracy at the federal level.”

Momentum Towards the Primaries

As the primary election looms, political observers have tagged the massive turnout at Shepherd Hill as a clear indicator of momentum. With a campaign focused on youth empowerment, healthcare interventions, and job creation, Salawu has positioned himself as a formidable frontrunner. The consensus among stakeholders at the rally suggests that his deep-rooted connection to the constituency remains his strongest asset heading into the polls.
