In a monumental shift for global health governance, the Governing Board of the Pandemic Fund has officially approved the accreditation of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) as an Implementing Entity. The decision, which follows a rigorous recommendation from the Fund’s Accreditation Panel, places Africa CDC among an elite group of institutions authorized to directly access, manage, and deploy Pandemic Fund resources across the continent.
This milestone marks Africa CDC as the first African Union institution and the first continental public health agency globally to secure this prestigious status. It also stands as only the second African institution overall to achieve this rank, following the African Development Bank. The accreditation gives Africa CDC direct authority to access and manage financing for pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response, significantly strengthening Africa’s capacity to lead its own health security priorities.
