…UN Chief Sounds Alarm on Sustainable Development Goals
Secretary-General António Guterres warned that the world is falling behind on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with only 17% of targets on track. He emphasized that progress has stalled or regressed on over one-third of the goals.
Guterres called for accelerated action in three key areas: peace, green and digital transitions, and finance. He urged countries to prioritize investment in people and peace, ambitious climate action, and expanded access to digital connectivity.
The UN chief also highlighted the need for increased financial resources and fiscal space for developing countries to invest in their futures.
The Sustainable Development Goals Report 2024 reveals significant challenges in achieving the SDGs, with setbacks in areas like climate change, peace, and security. However, it also showcases progress in reducing global child mortality, preventing HIV infection, and access to energy and mobile broadband.
With only six years remaining to achieve the SDGs, Guterres stressed that massive investment and scaled-up action are necessary to meet the goals and create a more resilient and prosperous world.
Li Junhua, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, noted that the report carries glimmers of hope, citing progress in areas like HIV treatment, education, and digital connectivity.
The report highlights urgent priorities and areas for stronger action to ensure the achievement of the SDGs and leave no one behind.
