The World Health Organisation (WHO) has joined the Federal Government and other partners in launching the National Community Food Bank Programme (NCFBP) for Nigeria’s South-South zone.

The programme was launched in Calabar, Cross River State, with WHO Nigeria Country Representative, Dr Pavel Ursu, joining First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Cross River State Governor Bassey Edet Otu, Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate, UNICEF Nigeria and other partners at the event.

The initiative is aimed at helping families affected by food insecurity and malnutrition, particularly children and women.

WHO said the programme is coming at a time when Nigeria is facing growing nutrition challenges, with recent Demographic and Health Survey trends showing gaps in nutrition among children and women.

Food Support and Health Services

The organisation said the community food bank programme will not only provide food but will also connect families with basic health and nutrition services.

Under the model, families can have access to nutritious food, nutrition screening, maternal and child health services, growth monitoring and immunisation.

WHO said this fits into its efforts to make nutrition part of Primary Health Care, especially for families who may have difficulty accessing essential services.

The organisation described the programme as an example of how government agencies and development partners can work together to address both food and health challenges.

Focus on Vulnerable Families

WHO also said the programme supports Nigeria’s efforts towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by helping vulnerable families access needed health services without being pushed into financial hardship.

According to the organisation, improving access to nutritious food and basic health services can give children a better start in life and support their growth, learning and development.

WHO said it will continue to support efforts that bring nutrition and essential health services closer to communities across Nigeria.
