As part of efforts to mark the World Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) Day, WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, has emphasized the urgent need for intensified efforts to combat these debilitating illnesses that affect billions worldwide.

World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day is observed every year on 30 January, and the theme for the 2024 edition is: “Unite. Act. Eliminate.”

Moeti, in a statement to commemorate the NTD Day, said leaders from across Africa and beyond are urging unity in addressing the devastating impact of NTDs, particularly on the most vulnerable communities.

According to him, significant strides have been made, with 18 million fewer people in Africa requiring interventions against NTDs and 19 countries in the region having eliminated at least one NTD.

Speaking on the success factor, Moeti said, “Key to this progress has been successful public-private partnerships, with non-governmental organizations and the Neglected Tropical Disease NGO Network (NNN) playing vital roles in advocacy and implementation. Pharmaceutical companies’ donation of medications for mass drug administration has also been instrumental.

“While increased awareness has led to improved diagnosis, treatment, and prevention efforts, Africa still bears 40% of the global burden of NTD cases. To address this, leaders emphasize the need to overcome persistent challenges and maintain momentum towards NTD elimination.”

He further added that the Kigali Declaration, issued last in 2023, has underscored the importance of high-level commitment and community engagement in the NTD response while initiatives like the Mwele Malacela Mentorship Programme for Women in NTDs aim to empower future leaders in this endeavor.
