The pursuit of a unified currency for West Africa took center stage as the Committee of Governors of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) convened in Monrovia to deliberate on regional monetary integration.
Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), led the Nigerian delegation to the high-level talks. He was accompanied by Dr. Muhammad Sani Abdullahi, the CBN Deputy Governor for Economic Policy, as Nigeria continues to play a pivotal role in the technical and economic evaluations required for the proposed Eco currency.

The gathering served as a critical continuation of the joint statutory meetings involving the West African Monetary Agency (WAMA), the West African Monetary Institute (WAMI), and the West African Institute for Financial and Economic Management (WAIFEM).
The primary objective of the session was to harmonize fiscal and monetary policies across member states to ensure the groundwork for a single currency remains viable amid fluctuating global economic conditions.
While the dream of a single currency has faced several delays over the decades, the presence of the region’s top financial regulators in Monrovia underscores a renewed commitment to overcoming the structural hurdles of inflation.
