In a significant move to fortify regional health security, the West African Health Organisation (WAHO), led by Director-General Dr. Melchior Aïssi, conducted high-level diplomatic talks with the Guinean government this week.
The mission focused on integrating Guinea into a pioneering regional vaccine roadmap and strengthening cross-sectoral health defenses.
High-Level Diplomatic Engagement
Dr. Aïssi was first received in an audience by Ms. Khaïté Sall, Guinea’s Minister of Health and Public Hygiene, before meeting with Prime Minister Bah Oury. The discussions centered on Guinea’s pivotal role in the ECOWAS health landscape and the ongoing evolution of its national medical infrastructure.
During the meetings, the Director-General praised the nation’s resilience and expertise in navigating complex health crises, affirming that ECOWAS remains committed to providing technical and financial support to ensure Guinea’s health systems remain robust.
“The West African Health Organisation stands firmly with Guinea. Our goal is to transform the lessons learned from past emergencies into a proactive, sustainable framework that protects every citizen,” stated Dr. Melchior Aïssi.
A New Frontier in Disease Prevention
A primary objective of the visit was the oversight of a national capacity-building workshop, where Dr. Aïssi advocated for two critical health pillars, the discussions focused on Guinea’s inclusion in the new “Holistic Regional Roadmap for Access to the Lassa Fever Vaccine.” This initiative, launched by WAHO in February 2026, aims to streamline the distribution and administration of vaccines for endemic viral hemorrhaging fevers across West Africa, and he als0 emphasized the urgent need to bridge the gap between human, animal, and environmental health sectors. This collaborative strategy is designed to detect and prevent zoonotic diseases before they escalate into regional pandemics.
Strengthening Regional Sovereignty
The visit marks a strategic step in WAHO’s broader mission to achieve health sovereignty for West African nations. By aligning Guinea’s national priorities with the regional roadmap, WAHO aims to ensure that life-saving vaccines and emergency preparedness protocols are standardized and readily available, reducing dependence on external aid during times of crisis.
